In sales conversations, list, lead and prospect are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and the gap between them is where most disappointment with lead data comes from. Being precise about the words protects everyone.
It helps to picture the options on a line, from raw data to a raised hand.
The most common misunderstanding is that a list of companies somehow represents interest. It does not. Being a good fit for what you sell is not the same as wanting to hear from you, and no amount of formatting changes that. A prospect list is the starting point for outreach, not the result of it.
If you have a sales team ready to work a market, a researched prospect list removes the slowest part of the job: finding the right companies and people. If what you need is interest, that comes from outreach, content and conversations, and it is a different service with a different price.
Choosing clearly at the start, and expecting only what the deliverable promises, is what makes lead data worth paying for.
