Demand generation and lead generation are frequently used as if they were the same activity. They are not. Demand generation builds awareness and interest among the people who are not ready to buy yet. Lead generation captures the smaller group that is ready now and wants to talk.
Separating the two clarifies both the tactics and the measures.
When the two are merged, demand generation is judged on the wrong metric — immediate leads — and gets cut when those are slow. Meanwhile lead generation is asked to deliver growth it cannot create on its own, because there is too little awareness feeding it. The result is a pipeline that looks busy in good months and empty in quiet ones.
The workable model separates the two clearly while connecting them: demand generation builds the audience that lead generation later converts. Measure them on different horizons, and make sure the content that creates demand is the same content prospects meet again at the moment of decision.
