Tracking and attribution basics for growing businesses

You cannot improve what you cannot see. A practical baseline for tracking what turns into revenue, without drowning in dashboards.

Start with the actions that matter

Tracking everything usually means understanding nothing. Begin with the small number of actions that represent real progress — a qualified enquiry, a booking, a purchase — and make sure those are measured reliably before adding detail.

A minimum viable setup

Most businesses need less than they think, but they need it to be accurate.

  • Analytics that records sessions and the conversions you care about.
  • Form and call tracking so offline and on-site enquiries are captured.
  • A consistent way to mark where each lead came from.
  • One place where the numbers are reviewed regularly.

Attribution is imperfect by nature

Buyers rarely move in a straight line, and no model captures every touch. The goal is not perfect attribution but consistent attribution: the same rules applied over time, so trends are trustworthy even if individual journeys are not fully credited.

Turn tracking into decisions

A measurement system earns its keep when it changes what you do. Review which sources produce customers rather than just visits, what each costs, and where prospects drop off — then move effort accordingly. Data nobody acts on is just reporting.

Questions

Direct answers

What if we sell offline or by phone?
Capture the source at the point of enquiry and record it in one place. Even a simple process for logging where calls and in-person leads came from closes most of the gap.
Do we need a complex dashboard?
No. A small set of reliable numbers reviewed on a regular rhythm is more useful than an elaborate dashboard nobody reads.
